Aymara Woman Study explores portraiture as a means of quiet observation, presence, and connection. I was drawn to the dignity and individuality of the sitter, as well as her Aymara heritage and the rich cultural history of the Aymara people of Peru and the wider Andes. Using oil on linen, I wanted to build a restrained study of light, colour, texture, and expression. Rather than pursuing photographic likeness alone, I wanted the painting to retain a sense of immediacy, allowing visible brushwork and subtle tonal shifts to preserve the human presence within the image. Ultimately, it is a study in looking, attention, identity, and appreciation.
